Rotation of a steering wheel is transmitted by the driver through a steering column and the steering mechanism, and also steering drafts on car wheels. The steering column can be regulated manually on height and in the longitudinal direction.

The effort necessary for turn of wheels, especially on the standing car, decreases thanks to existence of the hydraulic booster. The power steering consists of the oil pump, the tank of oil and oil pipelines. The oil pump is set in motion from the engine through maple a belt with edges. The pump we suck in oil from the tank and under high pressure gives it to the valve case. The case of the valve is located in the steering mechanism. It has mechanical communication with a steering column and depending on the direction of a rearrangement of a wheel directs oil to the relevant party of the working cylinder. Here oil influences the piston with a gear lath, reducing, thus, effort which needs to be put for turn of a wheel.

In a steering wheel the safety cushion is located. The safety cushion represents the put bag which is inflated with air at frontal collision and thus protects a trunk and the driver's head from blow about a steering wheel. At frontal collision of a certain force in a safety cushion via the monitor the small charge ignites. As a result of explosion gases which during several milliseconds fill an air bag are formed. This time is enough to damp the driver's trunk directing forward. Then the safety cushion within several seconds develops again as gases come out a pillow via outlets.

Carrying out welding leveling works by it on steering elements is not allowed. The self-stopped nuts surely are replaced with new.

Security measures at the address with a safety cushion

Near a safety cushion of the driver in a steering wheel there is a safety cushion of the forward passenger located over a ware box, side safety cushions in the doorway and a safety cushion for the head over doors. It is not allowed to establish on the place of the forward passenger a children's seat or any other device for keeping of children in the direction opposite to the movement. Besides, on a door rack, a solar peak or on the dashboard on the right side there has to be a plate "a children's seat ahead is not present". In the absence of the last the driver can be fined by police of Germany.

At removal and installation of the block of a safety cushion it is necessary to observe the following:

1 Disconnect a negative cable (-) of the rechargeable battery at the switched-off ignition. The battery is in a luggage compartment behind a cover on the right side. At the BMW 316i, 318i cars the battery settles down in a motive compartment.

As a result of shutdown of the rechargeable battery data from memory of malfunctions of some monitors are erased. If necessary before shutdown of the battery it is necessary to consider these memories of malfunctions. Address the Section Diagnostics of Malfunctions. 2 Isolate a negative pole (-) of the rechargeable battery to exclude casual contact.
3 Before installation of a safety cushion check again whether the negative cable of the rechargeable battery is disconnected.

General measures of safety

- After removal of a safety cushion you store it so that the soft party specified upward.
- At connection of the rechargeable battery stay in interior of the car of strangers is not allowed.
- If in work the break becomes, it is impossible to leave a safety cushion unguarded.
- It is not admissible to disassemble the safety cushion block. With malfunction it will be replaced completely. As the pillow contains explosive, it is necessary to store it reliably. Utilization of a pillow has to HUNDRED BMWs are carried out. It is not necessary to utilize a pillow independently at all. There is a danger of explosion!
- It is allowed to replace the steering wheel containing a safety cushion only with the steering wheel resolved by the manufacturer of the car.

- If the pillow was used as a result of accident, it is necessary to replace its monitor, the block of a pillow and the contact block.
- The block of a safety cushion and the monitor are sensitive to blows. If they fell from height more than 50 cm, they cannot be applied further. If the pillow fell from smaller height it is necessary to check it for HUNDRED.
- The safety cushion is allowed to be checked only for HUNDRED. It is impossible to apply to check of a pillow a control lamp, the voltmeter or an ohmmeter at all.
- When carrying out welding works the plug of the welding machine has to settle down in close proximity to the place of welding. It is necessary a negative cable of the rechargeable battery and to isolate a battery pole to exclude a possibility of casual contact. - It is not necessary to subject even to short-term influence of temperature above +75 °C the block of a pillow and the monitor.

Instructions on security measures at the movement
- The safety cushion does not replace a seat belt. Passengers of the car have to be fastened by belts, only it ensures optimum safety.
- Installation on a seat of the driver of any devices for deduction of children is not allowed. Children are younger than 12 years can settle down only on a back seat.
- The arrangement between a safety cushion and the person of any objects is not allowed.
