Removal and installation of the thermostat The thermostat opens a big contour of circulation at increase of temperature of cooling liquid. If owing to damage the thermostat does not open, the engine overheats. It can be determined by the index of temperature of cooling liquid which is in an emergency zone, at that time when the radiator at the same time remains cold. The damaged thermostat can also remain open after decrease in temperature of cooling liquid. A sign of it is that the engine does not reach the working temperature and the fact that value of temperature on the index of cooling liquid grows more slowly, than usually or heating becomes weak in the winter.

| The thermostat is built strongly in the case and cannot be taken out from there. With defect it needs to be replaced together with the case. |
1 Merge cooling liquid, address the Section Replacement of Cooling Liquid.
Models 320i, 323i, 328i
2 Models with the conditioner: Disconnect the fan with the viscous coupling, address the Section Removal and installation of the fan with the viscous coupling. 3 Turn off bolts of fastening and remove an eye in front on the engine.
Models 320d
4 Remove AGR radiator from the face party of the engine. 5 Disconnect the pipeline of cooling liquid under the thermostat case at a head of cylinders and at the holder.
7 I will corrode Rasstykuyte at the thermostat case. 8 Unscrew the case of the thermostat and remove together with sealing laying-2-.
| The thermostat cannot be checked usually by immersion in the container with hot water as temperature of its opening lies above a boiling point and makes 105 °C. |

9 Clear sealing surfaces on the case and a cover and wipe with the rag moistened in alcohol. 10 Evenly fix the thermostat case with new sealing laying the moment of 10 N • m.
| Do not tighten fastening bolts too strongly. |
11 In the presence of deformations replace sealing rings on quick disconnect couplings. Press wire clamps. Put on hoses, at the same time the coupling has to be fixed distinctly. 12 Join the socket at the thermostat case. 13 Models 320i, 323i, 328i: Fix by the moment 20 N • m an engine eye. 14 Models 320i, 323i, 328i with the conditioner: Install the fan with the viscous coupling, address the Section Removal and installation of the fan with the viscous coupling. 15 Models 320d: Fix the pipeline of cooling liquid under the thermostat case with the sealing laying. Fix the pipeline on the holder. Establish AGR radiator, address the Section Removal and installation of the inlet pipeline. 16 Fill system with liquid and remove air, address the Section Replacement of Cooling Liquid. 17 Start and warm up the engine. Check whether the radiator got warm and whether the thermostat case is tight. In the presence of leakages tighten fastening bolts. |
