If the instructions given below are not observed, there is a danger of poisoning with the following electrolyte. Besides, there can be a traumatizing or damage of the car owing to explosion of the rechargeable battery.
- Do not allow contact of electrolyte with eyes, skin, fabric or paint and varnish coverings. Electrolyte is aggressive. At electrolyte hit immediately carefully wash out the damaged site clear water. If necessary see a doctor.
- Do not use near the battery the open flame or objects forming sparks as from the battery combustible gases can be emitted.
- Use goggles.
- You watch to damaging starting cables the rotating parts, for example, the radiator fan.
1 The cross-sectional area of a starting cable for the petrol engine up to 2.5 l has to be not less than 16 mm2 (diameter about 5 mm). For the diesel engine or the petrol engine more than 2.5 l the section of cables has to be not less than 25 mm2. Defining here has to be the car with the discharged battery. Section of cables is specified, as a rule, on packing. It is recommended to buy a starting cable with the isolated cable clips and with a section of 25 mm2 as it is suitable also for engines with a smaller volume of cylinders.
2 At both rechargeable batteries tension has to make 12 Century.
3 The discharged battery can freeze already at a temperature – 10 °C. Before accession of a starting cable it is necessary that the frozen battery surely was defrozen.
4 The discharged battery has to be attached according to rules to onboard network.
5 Check electrolyte level in the discharged battery. If necessary add the distilled water.
6 Part cars from each other so that between them there was no metal contact. Otherwise at connection of positive poles electric current can proceed.
7 On both cars tighten parking brakes. Manual establish the check point in neutral situation, automatic in position of the parking "Р".
8 Switch off everything consumers of current.
9 The engine of the feeding car in the course of a charge surely has to work at single turns. Thus, the generator is protected from the damages able to arise owing to tension peaks at launch.
10 Attach a starting cable in the following sequence:
10a. Attach a red cable to the positive plug (+) in a motive compartment of the fed car. Previously cast away a cover-1-. If the fed car is not BMW of the 3rd series, attach a cable to a positive pole (+) the rechargeable battery.
10b. Attach other end of a red cable to the positive plug-1-of the feeding car.
10c. Attach a black cable to a point of weight(s)-2-on a depreciation rack of the feeding car. If the feeding car is not BMW of the 3rd series, attach a cable to a negative pole (-) of the battery.
10d. Attach other end of a black cable to a weight point on the right depreciation rack of the fed car. If the fed car is not BMW of the 3rd series, attach a cable to a reliable point of weight.
Do not attach to a negative pole (-) of the discharged battery. Best of all for this purpose the metal part connected by bolts to the block of cylinders approaches. Under adverse circumstances accession of a cable to a negative pole of the discharged battery can cause explosion of the battery owing to sparking and release of detonating gas.
Plugs of a starting cable at the attached cables should not contact with each other and respectively positive plugs should not concern weight points (a body or a frame) – danger of short circuit!
11 Start the engine of the fed car (the discharged battery) on single turns. At start continuously it is necessary to press no more than 10 a starter with as owing to the increased consumption of current clips of poles and a cable heat up. Therefore between separate starts it is necessary to do breaks for cooling lasting about 1/2 min.
12 At emergence of difficulties with start needlessly it is not necessary to include a starter long. During start fuel is continuously injected. Find out a cause of defect and eliminate it.
13 After successful start both cars have to be connected by a cable within 3 min. work.
14 For an exception of peaks of tension at separation at the car with the discharged battery turn on the fan and heating of back glass. Do not turn on driving beam. Glow lamps at the increased tension fuse.
15 After completion of start disconnect cables in the sequence from the foreign car, the return to accession. At first disconnect a black cable (-) at the fed car, then disconnect the feeding car. Disconnect a black cable at first at the feeding car and then at fed.
