Lock of ignition and start of the engine

 


0 The wheel is blocked

The key can be inserted into the lock or is taken from it only in this situation.

Having taken out a key, slightly shake a steering wheel that it was latched on the lock.

Cars with AT:
the translation of a control lever from situation P is allowed only at the working engine (the ignition key in situation 2).

Before return of a key to situation 0 or its extraction from the lock transfer AT control lever to situation P.

1 The wheel is unblocked


The turn of a key from situation 0 in situation 1 is often facilitated by easy rocking of a steering wheel.

Some consumers of current are in working readiness.

2 Ignition is included / for BMW 320d: preheat


All consumers of current are in working readiness.

3 Inclusion of a starter


Start of the engine

Before start


- Tighten the parking brake
- Establish a control lever by the transmission in neutral situation, and in the presence of AT - in the provision of P or N.
- At a low temperature of external air squeeze out and hold pressed a coupling pedal.

Never allow operation of the engine in the enclosed space. The fulfilled gases contain colourless and not having a smell, but very poisonous carbon monoxide. Inhalation of exhaust gases is unhealthy and can cause loss of consciousness and lead to death.

As the car is a potential source of danger, never leave it with the working engine unguarded.

Cars with the petrol engine


Without pressing an accelerator pedal, start the engine

It is not necessary to be limited to too short-term inclusion of a starter, but also it is impossible to hold it included longer than 20 seconds. As soon as engine
it will be got, at once release a key.

Do not warm up the engine idling, and at once begin the movement at moderate turns.

If the engine (cold or superheated) is not started from the first, then in repeated attempt of start:

You hold a pedal of an accelerator pressed approximately to a half of its course

Start of the cold engine at low temperatures (it is below -15 °C) and at big heights (more than 1000 m above sea level):

In the first attempt to start the engine you hold a starter included slightly longer usual (about 10 seconds)

You hold a pedal of an accelerator pressed approximately to a half of its course.

If you have to start often the engine at low temperatures and at big heights, then replace oil in the engine with oil of viscosity 5W-X (address the section Replacement of Motive Oil and Oil Filter).

Cars with the diesel engine


At the cold engine:


The ignition key has to be in situation 2 until the control lamp of preheat goes out

Start the engine.

At extremely low temperatures of external air the starter can be held included up to 40 seconds

At the heated-up engine:


If the control lamp of preheat does not burn, then at once start the engine

Pressing of a pedal of an accelerator does not influence process of start of the engine.

Do not warm up the engine idling, and at once begin the movement at moderate turns.

Removal of air from a power supply system of the diesel engine: if the fuel tank is empty, then, as a rule, removal of air from a power supply system is not required.

If nevertheless at start of the engine there are problems:

You hold a starter included within about 20 seconds.

Engine stop


To kill the engine, turn a key in situation 1 or 0.

Never take out a key from the lock on the run of the car. Otherwise at turn of a steering wheel the lock of a shaft of a steering column will be blocked.

Going out of the car, always take out a key from the lock of ignition and lock the lock of a shaft of a steering column.

Cars with RKPP:
at the parking on roads with a strong bias tighten the parking brake as inclusion of the first transfer or transfer of a backing under certain circumstances is insufficient to prevent spontaneous start-off of the car from the place.

Cars with AT:
transfer the AT selector lever to situation P.
