Check of a starter
To check a starter at a full tension of the battery, it is necessary to connect the 30 plugs (the big plug) and "50" (the small plug near big) a cable to cross section at least 4.0 mm2. If now the starter works faultlessly, it is necessary to check wires to a starter. If the starter does not turn, it should be removed and checked.
Exact check is carried out at the test stand or an electrotechnical workshop.
Removal and installation of a starter
The starter settles down sideways at a joint of the block of cylinders with RKPP and is removed down.

| 1 Disconnect a negative cable (-) of the rechargeable battery at the switched-off ignition. The battery is in a luggage compartment behind a cover on the right side. At the BMW 316i, 318i cars the battery settles down in a motive compartment.
| | As a result of shutdown of the rechargeable battery data from memory of malfunctions of some monitors are erased. If necessary before shutdown of the battery it is necessary to consider these memories of malfunctions. Address the Section Diagnostics of Malfunctions. Work it is desirable to carry out HUNDRED in conditions. | 2 Close negative polyusbatare to exclude a possibility of casual contact. 3 Lift and install the car on supports. Remove the lower cover of a motive compartment, address the Section Removal and installation of the lower cover of a motive compartment.
4 Models 320d: Remove a noise isolation on the left side of the engine, under a starter for what turn off one bolt.
5 Models 316i, 318i, 320i, 323i, 328i: For improvement of access to the generator disconnect fuel hoses around a starter in places of their muftovy connections.
| | Observe the security measures given below. Separation of fuel hoses is described in the Section Removal and installation of injectors.
- Near a workplace you do not smoke, do not use naked flame and the heated or very hot objects. There is a risk of fire! You keep in readiness the fire extinguisher.
- You monitor surely good ventilation of a workplace. Fuel vapors are poisonous.
- The fuel system is under pressure. When opening system there can be a fuel emission. Wipe fuel with a rag. You wear goggles. |

6 Disconnect wires:
1 – the plug 30, a thick wire directly from a positive pole of the rechargeable battery;
2 – the plug 50, from the ignition switch.
| | Mark wires that at assembly to attach them on former places. |
| 7 Turn out bolts of fastening of a starter from outside the manual check point by means of the corresponding extender.
8 Take out a starter from a flange of the check point back and remove it down.

9 Check a gear wheel of a starter and a gear wreath for existence of damages. |

| 10 Establish into place a starter and fix by its moment 50 N • m.
11 Join electric wires and fix them on the plug 30 by the moment of 12 N • m, and on the plug 50 the moment of 6 N • m.
| | Lay wires just as before removal. You watch that. That they did not rub about adjacent designs. | 12 Models 316i, 318i, 320i, 323i, 328i: Connect fuel hoses and fix also in the holder. Execute fastening by means of new collars. Sealing rings apply also new, address the Section Removal and installation of injectors.
13 Models 320d: Insert a noise isolation under a starter and fix it.
14 Establish the lower cover of a motive compartment, address the Section Removal and installation of the lower cover of a motive compartment.
15 Attach a negative cable (-) of the rechargeable battery at the switched-off ignition. Establish hours. | |
