Removal and installation of a head cylinders / replacement of sealing laying

The head of cylinders can be removed only at the cooled engine. For protection against damages of a paint and varnish covering establish protective laying or the corresponding covers on body wings.

Depending on type of the engine, year of release of the car and the equipment electric wires, vacuum hoses of cooling liquid can have various laying in a motive compartment. As it is not possible to consider all options of a design, it is recommended to mark a tape the corresponding wire before its detachment.

Signs of defective sealing laying of a head of cylinders is the following:

- Loss of engine capacity.
- Loss of cooling liquid. White clouds of smoke in the fulfilled gases at the warm engine.
- Oil loss.
- Availability of cooling liquid in motive oil, level of oil does not decrease, and increases. Gray color of motive oil. Vials of foam on the index of level. Oil fluidifying.
- Availability of motive oil in cooling liquid.
- Strong foaming of cooling liquid.
- A bad compression in two next cylinders.

Model 316i, 318i (M43TU engine)


 REMOVAL

1 Merge cooling liquid, including from the block of cylinders, address the Section Replacement of Cooling Liquid.
2 Remove the thermostat, address the Section Removal and installation of the thermostat.
3 Remove the inlet pipeline, address the Section Removal and installation of the inlet pipeline.
4 Remove spark plugs, address the Section of the Spark plug.
5 Remove ignition coils, address the Section Removal and installation of coils of ignitions/cables of ignition.
6 Turn off bolts of fastening and remove a reception pipe of system of release, address the Section Removal and installation of system of release.
7 Turn off bolts of fastening and uncover a head of cylinders. At the same time at first weaken evenly cross-wise bolts, then turn out them.

8 Turn off bolts of fastening and remove the holder of the device of air supply and the electromagnetic valve with pressure accumulator (shooters on an illustration).

9 Turn off bolts of fastening and remove the sensor of position of the camshaft and take out it together with a sealing ring.

10 Turn off bolts of fastening and remove the top cover of a box of the GRM drive. Remove rubber laying under the lower cover.

11 Cut through from within outside and remove sealing laying of a head of cylinders at the top edge of the lower cover (an arrow on an illustration). Laying needs to be replaced. As the spare part it is possible to use laying for the top cover of a box of the GRM drive.

12 Turn a bent shaft for the central bolt of fastening to the right side so that the piston of the first cylinder was in VMT. At the same time the arrow on an asterisk shows up. One of the next ways can turn a bent shaft:

— Tighten the parking brake and establish the check point in neutral situation. Turn a bent shaft for the central bolt of fastening of a pulley by means of a face key in the direction of an hour hand.
— Lift and put a side back part of the car on supports. Include the fifth transfer and release the parking brake. Turn the lifted back wheel. Thus, the bent shaft is turned. This operation requires the assistant.
— Put the car on the flat platform. Include the fifth transfer. Shift the car forward or back.

13 Fix camshafts the BMW-11 3 190 tool shown on an illustration in this situation. It is possible to use also the tool of KLANN, KL-0580-5.

14 Record a bent shaft in the provision of VMT the BMW-11 2 300 tool or the corresponding core. For this purpose insert a core through an opening in the block of cylinders into an opening in a flywheel (an arrow on an illustration), previously having taken out a stopper.

15 Turn off bolts of fastening of an asterisk of the camshaft. Slowly shift a boot of a natyazhitel for a hexagon by means of a wrench back and thus unload a chain. Remove an asterisk.

16 Turn off bolts of fastening and remove from a head of cylinders an uspokoitel and a boot of a tension (an arrow on an illustration).

Before an otvorachivaniye of bolts of fastening of a head of cylinders turn a bent shaft back on a corner 45 °. Thus, the contact of valves of pistons is excluded. After installation of a head of cylinders turn a bent shaft in the provision of VMT of the first cylinder again.

17 Weaken for several receptions bolts of fastening of a head of cylinders outside inside. The otvorachivaniye of bolts requires a special key of Torx, for example, of HAZET-2925.
18 By means of the assistant remove a head from the block of cylinders.

If it is necessary, carefully hook a head of cylinders the screw-driver, watching to damaging a sealing surface.


 INSTALLATION

19 Clear a shaber the sealing surface of the block of cylinders of the remains of sealing laying. You watch that dirt did not get to openings of the block of cylinders. Close an opening rags.
20 Clear a sealing surface of a head of cylinders.

21 Check planeness of a head and the block of cylinders a steel ruler in the longitudinal and cross direction. If necessary process (work HUNDRED). The maximum deviation from planeness of 0.03 mm. The required height of a head of cylinders is specified in Specifications.

22 Carefully clear carving openings under bolts of fastening of a head of cylinders of oil and other pollution.

In carving openings there should not be an oil, otherwise bolts do not transfer total pressure to a head of cylinders though they also are tightened by the determined moment. Besides, at the same time the block of cylinders can burst.

23 Check whether there are two guides of the plug (shooters for illustrations). If is not present, insert them and check reliability of landing.

24 Put on the fat-free surface of the block of cylinders new sealing laying without sealant so that openings remained open.

25 Establish a head of cylinders by means of the assistant. At the same time wring out a wrench for a hexagon a boot of a natyazhitel back (an arrow on an illustration).

26 Oil motive new bolts of fastening of a head of cylinders. Then screw bolts and evenly tighten on a spiral from within outside to a prileganiye.

Surely establish new bolts. Bolts for several receptions drag on. The calibrated dynamometer key has to be applied to an inhaling.


27 Tighten bolts of fastening of a head of cylinders in the sequence with 1 on 10 in three steps. The moments of an inhaling are given in Specifications.

The inhaling of bolts of fastening of a head of cylinders should be carried out with special care. Before an inhaling it is necessary to check the accuracy of a dynamometer key. Besides, the inhaling of bolts requires an angular washer, for example, of HAZET 6690. If such washer is unavailable, put a key, apply a goniometer to the key lever and note chalk a corner 90 °. Then turn a key at one time to the put mark.

28 Fix on a head of cylinders an uspokoitel and a boot of a tension of a chain of the GRM drive.
29 Turn a bent shaft in the provision of VMT of the first cylinder and insert a core.
30 Wring out for a hexagon a boot of a natyazhitel back and put on an asterisk with a chain. The arrow on an asterisk has to specify up. Expose oval openings on the center.
31 The camshaft has to be fixed in VMT. Enshrine an asterisk in this provision by four bolts the moment of 10 N • m.

Remove the fixing tools of cranked and distributive shaft.

33 Clear sealing surfaces under the top cover of a box of the GRM drive.
34 Check existence of damages of sealing laying between the top and lower covers of a box of GRM, if necessary replace. Put laying. At the same time the eminence on laying has to enter a groove on a head of cylinders.
35 Replace paper laying of a cover of a box of GRM.

36 Grease with a thin layer of jellied lubricant the top party of rubber laying and the BMW-11 2 330 tool. The tool is put on sealing laying before installation of a cover of a box of GRM. Besides, for the direction two fingers of BMW-11 4 110 are rolled in the top carving openings. Instead of the specified tools a thin steel sheet and two carving fingers can be applied.

37 Establish GRM box cover, insert and screw fastening bolts so that the bolt head adjoined. Take out the BMW-11 2 330 tool.

38 Establish a cover of a head of cylinders without laying. Screw M6 screws with big washers (shooters on an illustration). At the same time the cover of a box of GRM has to nestle down so that the top edges of a cover of a box and a head of cylinders lay at one level. In this situation tighten bolts of fastening of a cover of a box of GRM the moment of 15 N • m. Remove the directing fingers and screw the remained bolts on their place, tighten them also the moment of 15 N • m.

39 Again uncover a head of cylinders.

40 Grease with elastic sealant, for example, of "Drei Bond 1209" or "Loctit Ultra Black" the interfaced surfaces of a cover of a box of GRM and a head of cylinders (an arrow on an illustration).

41 Grease with the same sealant transitions to a semicircle of sealing laying (the shooter on an illustration).

42 Fix cross-wise a cover of a head of cylinders with laying the moment of 10 N • m. You watch that laying did not act.

The cover of a head of cylinders is damped and condensed with rubber laying of bolts of fastening. Therefore do not turn rubber laying.

43 Insert and fix the sensor of position of camshafts with a sealing ring.
44 Zakrepimte bolts a reception pipe of system of release, address the Section Removal and installation of system of release.
45 Install the inlet pipeline, address the Section Removal and installation of the inlet pipeline.
46 Install ignition coils, address the Section Removal and installation of coils of ignitions/cables of ignition.
47 Establish spark plugs, address the Section of the Spark plug.

48 Fix the holder of air supply and the electromagnetic valve with pressure accumulator.

49 Install the thermostat, address the Section Removal and installation of the thermostat.
50 Fill system with cooling liquid and remove from it air, address the Section Replacement of Cooling Liquid.
51 Check oil level in the engine. If necessary add oil to mark MOVE.

If the head of cylinders was removed owing to defective laying, replace oil as in motive oil there can be a cooling liquid. Replace oil, address the Section Replacement of Motive Oil and Oil Filter.


Models 320i, 323i, 328i (M52TU engine)

 REMOVAL

As removal of a head of cylinders represents quite labor-consuming operation and demands the special BMW tool, it is recommended to perform this work on HUNDRED.

52 Remove the inlet pipeline, address the Section Removal and installation of the inlet pipeline.
53 Remove camshafts, address the Section Removal and installation of camshafts.
54 Remove both inlet pipelines from a head of cylinders.

For this purpose the engine has to be suspended on the crane and one support of the engine is released, address the Section Removal and installation of the pallet of a case.

55 Again tighten nuts of M10 of fastening of a support of the engine the moment of 47 N • m also remove the crane. If M8 nuts are established, them it is necessary to tighten the moment of 22 N • m.
56 Merge cooling liquid and disconnect the thermostat case, address the Section Removal and installation of the thermostat.
57 Turn off two bolts of fastening and remove from a head of cylinders a branch pipe of cooling liquid under the inlet pipeline.

58 Turn out GRM box cover screws (arrows on an illustration). Instruction: Camshafts on it and the following illustrations are shown established, but actually have to be removed.

59 Turn off bolts of fastening and take out an uspokoitel of a driving chain of GRM (an arrow on an illustration).

60 Weaken for several receptions bolts of fastening of a head of cylinders outside inside. Performance of this operation requires a key for Torx screws, for example, of HAZET 2925.

After removal of a head of cylinders do not put it on a sealing surface. At the same time completely open valves can be damaged. Put a head on two wooden whetstones.


 INSTALLATION

61 Remove the remains of sealing laying with solvent for sealant and a shaber from strong breeds of a tree. You watch that the remains of sealant did not get to openings. Close openings rags.
62 Carefully clear carving openings for bolts of fastening of a head of cylinders of oil and other pollution by compressed air or the rag wound around the narrow screw-driver.

Do not allow hit of oil in carving openings as it distorts the moment of an inhaling of bolts. Besides, it can lead to formation of cracks in the block of cylinders.
